Jobing Description
The Signal Group, Inc., which specializes in electrical construction for the transportation industry, is seeking a Drill Shaft Foreman for our main office in Jupiter, Florida.

Operate a combination of equipment, devices, and tools such as pumps, derricks, pressure diggers, mechanical rigging, diamond or saw-toothed bits, vibratory hammers, hole casings, generators, compressors, and a variety of standard and special sampling devices in the performance of drilling operations.

Supervises a crew typically made up of 3-4 Traffic Signal Installers or Laborers.

Essential Functions:
  • Set up and operate drilling machine that drills holes through sand, silt, peat, rock, etc.
  • Complete work as assigned through oral or written instructions accompanied by geologic specifications, drilling tables and formulas, and instrument reading information.
  • Interpret assignments in terms of types of drilling to be done, equipment to be used, crew to be assigned, and geologic problems or special geologic features to observe, in order to plan and coordinate field requirements such as replacement parts and supplies, mechanical means to gain access to jobsite, and equipment setups required.
  • Prepare clear and concise daily operation reports from equipment and vehicle log books and on occasion, log geologic information such as depth and classification of materials drilled.
  • Work independently on all field drilling assignments, making autonomous decisions based on written work orders.
  • Apply drilling methods and techniques, such as operating controls properly to lower bits safely into hole, manipulating controls to adjust engine power precisely to any drilling condition, winching up the bit in alignment with the hole. Apply skill in adjusting and controlling bit speed and drilling mud volume and viscosity so shafts are protected from collapsing. Use bits and equipment components safely to their maximum limit.
  • Make such adjustments as changing bits, bailing buckets, and setting casings, or changing drilling method as necessary.

    Additional Responsibilities:
  • Apply good judgment involving a high level of reflex action to respond to unusual machinery sounds and vibrations, sudden variances in mud viscosity, and erratic drill rig action.
  • Maintain, oil, grease, and make minor operating adjustments as part of their duties.
  • Operate and maintain company vehicles and equipment safely at all times. Report vehicle and equipment maintenance requirements to Fleet Manager. Repair damaged equipment as directed.
  • Document and record reports as required by the company
  • Maintain a valid Class A driver's license and a CDL driver's rating.
  • Perform other related duties as may be assigned.

    Physical Effort: requires standing for prolonged periods, walking, bending, pushing, pulling, reaching, and lifting. Drill rig operators frequently handle objects weighing 40 to 75 pounds and occasionally as much as 100 pounds. Heavy or awkward items are handled using hoists and other weight handling equipment, or with the aid of other employees.

  • Skills / Requirements
  • Knowledge of most types of conventional drill rigs and auxiliary equipment and knowledge of the drillability of hard rock and sediments to perform the full range of standard drilled shaft foundations operations.
  • Ability to recognize poor drilling results, normally indications of formation changes which need to be brought to the attention of a geologist or a supervisor.
  • Ability to recognize features of most underlying formations by the action of the drill, color of sediment, and rate of drilling.
  • Knowledge and use the proper drilling procedures to ensure maximum productivity and accurate recording of depths and diameters.
  • Capable of running up to 72 diameter augers to 40 depths.
  • Must be qualified to operate a Texoma Model 650-40D Pressure Digger or comparable heavy equipment and have a verifiable minimum 2 years job experience.
  • Minimum 2-5 years of experience with pressure diggers and drill shaft equipment required.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of supervisory experience required.
  • CDL Class A Driver License required. Safe Driver certification a plus.
  • Drill Shaft Inspector Certification strongly desired.
  • Boom Truck Operator training certification desired.
  • Crane Operations and Safety training certification desired.
